WISCONSIN DEMOCRACY CAMPAIGN E-LERT
In this update:
1. Cost of state Supreme Court tops $5.8 million
2. Report on health care reform opponents' donations makes statewide news
Candidates and special interest groups that ran their own campaigns to influence the outcome of this April's state Supreme Court election combined to spend more than $5.8 million on the race, according to a Democracy Campaign analysis.
Among the Democracy Campaign's findings:
- Overall spending was more than four times the previous record.
- One candidate alone – the winner, Justice-elect Annette Ziegler – spent more than the previous record for total spending in a high court race.
- One special interest group – Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce – was responsible for more than one-third of all spending in the race.
- The origins of more than half the money spent were concealed from public view.
If this doesn't make the case for prompt passage of the Impartial Justice bill, we don't know what will.

The report the Democracy Campaign released yesterday on campaign contributions from opponents of health care reform made news across the state. The Associated Press sent out a story on its state news wire service. Wisconsin Public Radio made mention of the report on its statewide Ideas Network, and Wisconsin Radio Network also did a story on the subject for its 70-plus member stations throughout the state.
