WISCONSIN DEMOCRACY CAMPAIGN E-LERT

In this update:
1. Political "tourists" come in droves to Wisconsin
2. More trouble for voter registration project
3. Campaign fundraisers get in the way of budget talks

Wisconsin's tourism economy is booming. Dollars are flowing into the state like never before. But it's politics that is attracting these tourists, not waterparks or scenic beauty.

Governor Jim Doyle raised a staggering $1.8 million from donors outside the state during his first four years in office – almost $1 out of every $5 he's raised in campaign donations – and nearly half of it flowed in during 2006 alone from donors who had never given to anyone in Wisconsin before. Those are the key findings in a study of out-of-state contributions to the governor the Democracy Campaign issued today.

The fact that nearly a fifth of the governor's money comes from people who cannot vote for him raises an important question: On whose behalf is the governor working?

The saga of the state's ill-fated contract with the global outsourcing firm Accenture to develop a statewide computerized voter registration system has taken another turn. Go here to see what's happened now.

Last Monday, we issued a report on campaign fundraising during the budget process. That subject also inspired this story in Saturday's Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
