WISCONSIN DEMOCRACY CAMPAIGN E-LERT

The state Judicial Commission announced today that it has found state Supreme Court Justice Annette Ziegler engaged in judicial misconduct and is recommending she receive a reprimand. The commission is filing a formal complaint with the state Supreme Court, which will have the final say on disciplinary action against Ziegler.

The commission launched its investigation in response to a formal request from the Democracy Campaign.

If the commission's recommendation holds, the punishment will amount to a light tap on the wrist for the newest member of the high court and will send a most unfortunate message to the rest of the state's judges that the judicial ethics code can be taken with a grain of salt because next to nothing will happen to them if they are caught breaking it.

It is now up to the members of the Supreme Court to stand in judgment of one of their own colleagues, and the Democracy Campaign hopes they will take a far firmer stand in favor of strict enforcement of the ethics rules judges are supposed to faithfully follow.
