Wisconsin's reputation for clean government was further stained yesterday when the U.S. Attorney's office in the Department of Justice announced that Kenosha businessman John Erickson, an associate of one-time casino developer and now convicted felon Dennis Troha, is pleading guilty to federal charges relating to his role in a money laundering scheme that was used to funnel campaign contributions to candidates for federal, state and local office. Speaking of stains . . . .
"That elephant in the living room otherwise known as the state Supreme Court has left a soiled spot on the carpet".
That's how The Janesville Gazette began its editorial yesterday about Annette Ziegler and the choice facing the state Supreme Court. The court is on the horns of a dilemma. Either it opts for smooth relations with its newest member or it opts to signal that ethics rules matter and will be strictly enforced. The court can't have both. It has to choose. That's the subject of our latest Big Money Blog.
The stains left on Wisconsin's proud history by these most recent disgraces are all the more reason for citizens to confront political corruption at the source. The Storm for Reform rally next Tuesday is an opportunity to do just that. See you there.
