State Supreme Court Justice Annette Ziegler was in court yesterday, but not the Supreme Court. She was in a county courthouse in West Bend for a hearing on her conflict-of-interest case. The Democracy Campaign's director was there and posted this blog about the proceedings. For other coverage of the hearing, go here, here and here.
A story in Sunday's Milwaukee Journal Sentinel shined light on how some state legislators are padding their bank accounts by accepting taxpayer-financed state reimbursement of food and lodging expenses while in Madison but then also charging their campaign accounts for the expenses. Today's Journal Sentinel has another article indicating the practice may be finally prompting some official action.
In our last E-Lert we noted that a new poll is showing that concern about state government ethics is on the rise, and now more people consider it Wisconsin's biggest problem than identify jobs and the economy, health care, education, gas prices, crime and drugs, the environment or immigration as the state's greatest challenge.
The latest Wisconsin Survey conducted by St. Norbert College for Wisconsin Public Radio also shows the Legislature's approval ratings are lower than ever. State residents who are dissatisfied with the Legislature's performance now outnumber satisfied citizens by nine percentage points.
