WISCONSIN DEMOCRACY CAMPAIGN E-LERT
In this update:
1. Key vote looms on media consolidation
2. Yet another poll shows public disgust with state politicians
Barring a last-minute change of heart, the Federal Communications Commission's chairman is plowing ahead with plans to force a vote on new rules allowing giant media conglomerates to further tighten their grip on the public's sources of news and entertainment. A vote is scheduled for tomorrow. Contact FCC chairman Kevin Martin and demand that he cancel the vote. And contact the other commissioners, too, and urge them to oppose Martin's efforts to allow huge media monopolies to get even bigger.
There is growing opposition to Martin's plan in Congress and an increasingly promising opportunity to block big media's expansion, namely federal legislation (S. 2332) called the Media Ownership Act of 2007. Twenty bipartisan sponsors have lined up behind the bill in the Senate, and among them is Wisconsin's own Russ Feingold. But Senator Herb Kohl has not yet signed on, so it is more important than ever to send a message to Washington. Please take a few minutes to do so today.
Poll after poll is showing that the public is really fed up with state politicians. The latest evidence was provided by a conservative think tank. The group's findings are the subject of today's Big Money Blog.
