In this update:
1. Senate to vote on publicly financed Supreme Court elections 2. Should judges be elected at all?
The Impartial Justice bill (SB 171) has been put on the state Senate’s calendar for next Tuesday. With a vote now looming on this sorely needed reform that would free candidates for the state’s highest court from the growing special interest and partisan influences that threaten the independence of the judicial system, your involvement is needed. Sometime between now and Tuesday morning, please take a few minutes to contact your state senator and urge a "yes" vote on Senate Bill 171. You can use the toll-free Legislative Hotline at 800-362-9472 (266-9960 in
Madison). For an e-mail directory for senators, go here. If you are not sure who your state senator is, go here. ______________________________________________________________ Last year’s outrageously expensive and repulsively nasty state Supreme Court election disgusted and alarmed many, and led some to start questioning whether we should even elect judges. Our latest Big Money Blog takes on this subject, and cautions against throwing the baby out with the bath water.
