2009 State Superintendent of Public Instruction
| Rose Fernandez, 51, has owned a company called RollNRack since 2003 that sells a device invented by her husband that firefighters use to move and drain large rolls of water hoses. Fernandez, who lives in Mukwonago, worked at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin from 1979 until 2001 as a pediatric nursing assistant, patient care manager and trauma nurse. Fernandez received a bachelor’s degree in 1979 from Northern Illinois University and a master’s degree in nursing in 1989 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Fernandez is the former president of the Wisconsin Coalition of Virtual School Families. The group successfully pushed legislation in early 2008 that allowed virtual schools to remain open and continue to receive state funding after a court ruled the schools violated state school aid and teacher licensing rules. On one key issue in the race, Fernandez opposes repealing a 1993 law that created the Qualified Economic Offer. The law prevents teachers’ unions from going to arbitration during contract negotiations if the school district offers them a 3.8 percent increase in salary and benefits. Fernandez finished second in the February 17 five-way primary, capturing 31 percent of the vote. Fernandez and candidate Tony Evers face off in the April 7 spring election. |
