Re: Comment on Proposed Citizen Info Collection on 2020 Census,
Docket No. USBC-2018-0005

Man filling out survey

Dear Ms. Jessup:

The Wisconsin Democracy Campaign urges the Department of Commerce to remove the citizenship question from the 2020 Census form.

Having the citizenship question on the Census would instill more fear in immigrant communities. This added fear would inevitably result in many immigrants refusing to fill out the Census form. Consequently, this question would yield a grossly inaccurate Census, which would violate the U.S. Constitution’s requirement that the Census provide an accurate account of all persons.

The undercounting would also lead to underrepresentation, which is antithetical to democracy. Our Founders fought the War of Independence over the issue of fair representation. The Census form should not violate that principle.

Thank you for considering our view on this urgent issue.

Sincerely,

Matt Rothschild
