2011 Recall Election Notes and Background

Senator Holperin was first elected to the Assembly in 1982, retired from the Assembly in 1994 and first elected to the Senate in 2008.

Senator Holperin was one of nine senators facing recall elections in 2011, recall spurred by the passage of Governor Scott Walker's plan to curtail public employee collective bargaining rights. He had no primary opposition and faced Republican opposition in the August recall election.

DLCC Wisconsin PAC ($87), Greater Wisconsin Political Independent Expenditure Fund ($646,140), PCCC Recall Committee ($2,610), PFFW Defense Fund ($407), Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin Political Fund ($2,438), Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin Inc. ($10,000), We Are Wisconsin PAC ($1,355,826), WEAC PAC ($31,010), Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters IE Committee ($8,619) and Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters PAC ($32,854) made independent expenditures favoring Senator Holperin.

NFIB Safe Trust ($285), Republican State Leadership Committee Inc. ($346,495), Taxpayers Hoping for Change ($6,768) and Wisconsin Right to Life ($2,502) made independent expenditures supporting his opponent.

Our Country Deserves Better (estimated $12,500) made independent expenditures favoring Senator Holperin's opponent but did not register with the state's Government Accountability Board and did not file any other legally required documentation.

Greater Wisconsin Committee spent undisclosed sums on "issue ads" in support of Senator Holperin. Americans for Prosperity, Jobs First Coalition, Republican State Leadership Committee and State Government Leadership Foundation spent undisclosed sums on "issue ads" in opposition.
