State legislative candidates aren’t the only ones raising campaign money at a record pace in Wisconsin. An elite corps of wealthy state donors also are turning out their pockets for political hit groups known as "527s," giving these national outfits that specialize in smear campaigns record sums of money to use to sway voters in this fall’s elections.

A Democracy Campaign analysis released this morning shows that donations to 527s not only are way up, but nearly $3 of every $4 contributed by Wisconsin donors went to Democratic groups.

This mirrors the trend that is emerging in fundraising by state legislative candidates, with Democrats outraising Republicans, as the Democracy Campaign reported last week.
