Jensen games legal system to get plea deal, gets off with fine
Former Assembly Speaker Scott Jensen was criminally charged with felony misconduct in public office more than eight years ago, was eventually convicted on three felony counts and sentenced to 15 months in prison. His stable of lawyers employed every legal maneuver in the book, got the conviction overturned on a technicality and won Jensen a new trial. Then they got the new trial moved from Dane County to Jensen’s home county of Waukesha. As the Democracy Campaign’s director wrote back in May, that whole arrangement made a new trial unlikely and looked like a plea deal waiting to happen.
It all paid off for Jensen today, as a plea agreement was announced. Instead of 15 months in prison, Jensen gets off with a $5,000 fine.
There is another state Supreme Court election around the corner. The incumbent, Justice David Prosser, is already out on the stump. What he’s saying is raising some eyebrows. Our latest Big Money Blog has more on this.
