One Door Closing, Another About to Open

Email date: 12/30/10

As our recently issued annual report shows, we had a busy and productive year in 2010 and have accomplished a great deal over the past 15 years. We couldn't have done it without the ongoing support of so many people all across Wisconsin. If you've been thinking of making a year-end gift to the Democracy Campaign, there’s still one more day after today to get that deduction for this tax year. Just go here and it’ll only take a minute.

We have our work cut out for us in the year ahead. All the election campaigning you had to endure this fall, all the TV and radio ads, all the junk mail, all the robocalls were paid for by less than 1% of the state’s population. You can bet the newly elected governor and legislature are going to be trying to reward those special interests that paid to put them in office.

Not only do we have state lawmakers who are intent on catering to the tiny segment of the population that effectively owns our government, but we have courts that are increasingly hostile to sensible campaign finance regulation and seem hellbent on creating a political marketplace where participation is prohibitively expensive for all but a few in our society.

There has never been a time when the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign was needed more than it is right now.

The challenges before us in the new year are enormous, but it’s no time to curl up in a ball. We’re going to come out fighting. We’re going to follow the money and analyze the donations that funded 2010 election campaigns as well as the contributions that flow in during the 2011-2012 legislative session. We’re going to connect the dots between those donations and public policy decisions by the governor and legislature showing how campaign contributors are repaid for their support.

In about a month, we are going to be launching a new initiative to engage citizens as never before in defense of clean, open and honest government. And in a few months we’ll be scaling up our Campaign for Accountable Redistricting to make the process of redrawing legislative districts more transparent and accountable than it’s ever been.

We’ll need the resources to carry out this ambitious agenda, and that’s why we ask you now to consider making a tax deductible year-end gift to the Democracy Campaign. You can go here to use our secure online site or here to print a form to mail in with your contribution.

All of us here at WDC wish you and yours a very happy new year.
