Busted railroad exec evokes feeling of déjà vu
News of a corrupt railroad executive being criminally charged for making illegal campaign contributions was like a blast from the past. Over a century and a half ago, an eerily similar episode involving a wealthy railroad baron provoked a citizen uprising that substantially altered Wisconsin’s political landscape.
The central figure in the current scandal, Wisconsin & Southern Railroad CEO William Gardner, is one of the fattest of Wisconsin’s fat cats and someone we've had an eye on for some time. The Democracy Campaign first flagged Gardner a year ago for making what appeared to be illegal donations.
McCabe on Wisconsin Public TV’s ‘Here and Now’
Democracy Campaign director Mike McCabe was a guest on Wisconsin Public Television’s “Here and Now” program over the weekend. Among the topics of discussion were the Brookfield Blunder and outside interest group spending in the state Supreme Court election. To watch the segment, go here.
