Wisconsin couple makes million-dollar donation to pro-Walker group
While combing through the latest batch of filings by tax-exempt nonprofit groups with the Internal Revenue Service, the Democracy Campaign discovered this week that a Milwaukee-area couple made a $1 million donation in March to the national Republican Governors Association, which is heavily advertising in Wisconsin in support of Governor Scott Walker. The contribution by the managing director of a private equity firm and his wife to the RGA’s tax-exempt nonprofit, also known as a 527 group, was the largest single political donation ever made in Wisconsin.

That’s an awful lot to spend for “free” speech. But it does seem to be the going rate the ultra-wealthy are paying.

Follow-the-money database grows
The Democracy Campaign just added about 28,000 new records of political donations to our searchable online database of donors to state campaigns. The contributions were gleaned from the most recent campaign finance reports covering fundraising through the end of 2013.
