Wisconsin Democracy Campaign Urges Joint Finance to Keep Fair Maps Funding in State Budget

April 29, 2019

Letter sent to members of the Wisconsin State Legislature's Joint Finance Committee encouraging them to keep funding for nonpartisan redistricting in the state budget.

April 25, 2019

Dear Members of the Joint Finance Committee,

We at the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign urge you to keep in the budget the proposal from Gov. Evers to hire additional staff at the Legislative Reference Bureau so Wisconsin can implement nonpartisan redistricting.

The people of Wisconsin strongly favor nonpartisan redistricting. A Marquette Law School poll earlier this year showed that 72 percent of Wisconsinites want to ban gerrymandering, including 63 percent of Republicans and 76 percent of Independents.

Already 46 Wisconsin counties have passed county board resolutions urging the state legislature to adopt nonpartisan redistricting. And 34 of the 46 Wisconsin counties that have passed this resolution went for Donald Trump in 2016.

What’s more, the citizens of eight counties have passed referendums by overwhelming margins in favor of nonpartisan redistricting:

  • Dane: 4/1/2014, 82% in favor
  • Eau Claire: 11/6/18, 74% in favor
  • Lincoln: 11/6/18, 65% in favor
  • Outagamie: 4/3/2018, 72% in favor
  • Sauk: 11/6/18, 72% in favor
  • Winnebago: 11/6/18, 69% in favor

As you can see, the citizens of Wisconsin – your constituents – by every measure favor nonpartisan redistricting. So please, enable it to happen by voting to include the Governor’s proposal on redistricting in the budget.
