Among other issues, a League questionnaire asks candidates their positions on specific reforms designed to reduce the influence of special interests in elections and to promote a fair and transparent process for drawing legislative district lines in 2011.

“Voters deserve to know about where candidates stand on campaign finance and redistricting. These are fundamental questions that get at how state government will operate in the coming term and the decade ahead. Candidates for the Legislature should be prepared to vote on these issues, and they should let the voters know where they stand,” said Mike McCabe, director of Wisconsin Democracy Campaign.

The groups urge candidates to respond to the questionnaire, which has been mailed to all candidates listed by the Government Accountability Board, with a response deadline of Friday, August 6, 2010.

“Citizen confidence in state government has never been lower and legislative and statewide candidates need to demonstrate that they care about transparency and openness, and that they are not pawns of powerful special interest groups,” said Jay Heck, executive director of Common Cause in Wisconsin. “Redistricting and campaign finance reform and disclosure are not partisan political issues. They are good government issues and citizens deserve to know where candidates stand on them,” Heck added.

The candidates’ responses to the questionnaire will be linked from the websites of the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin (, Common Cause in Wisconsin ( and Wisconsin Democracy Campaign.
