WDC Urges Public Records Board to Reverse Decision Creating Open Records Exemption

January 5, 2016

To the Members of the Public Records Board:

The Wisconsin Democracy Campaign urges you to reverse the decision you made at your August 24, 2015, meeting when you made exceptions for “transitory” records under Wisconsin's open records law.

As we saw within 24 hours of your decision, officials in the Walker Administration seized upon it to deny requests for information that was of great public interest.

Leaving aside the fact that the records that were being sought (concerning a $500,000 WEDC loan) were not “transitory,” it’s obvious that officials have used your decision as a way to exempt themselves from our public records law and that officials in the future could do so, as well, at great cost to the principle of open government.

We, therefore, urge you to close this loophole and rescind your decision of August 24, 2015.
