Pledge Letter 2002

Letter sent to candidates asking them to support campaign finance reform. Clean Sweep Pledge Letter 2002

July 29, 2002

Dear Candidate:

At no time in recent memory has there been such a crisis of public confidence in the integrity of the political process in Wisconsin. The State Capitol is awash in scandal. A prominent state senator has been charged with 18 felonies. Criminal investigations focusing on other top political leaders continue. Political corruption and the need for reforms that cleanse state politics will be key issues in the 2002 election.

On behalf of the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, I write to call on you to publicly pledge to support a "clean sweep" of the State Capitol after the election. Specifically, we ask you to respond to the enclosed Clean Sweep Questionnaire by Friday, August 9. We will make your responses public the week of August 12.

In publicly releasing candidate responses, we will highlight candidates who pledge to fully support Clean Sweep reforms by answering "yes" to each and every question.

Wisconsin faces an ethical crisis in state government. It is time for those who are truly committed to repairing the damage that has been done to our state’s reputation for clean, open and accountable government to stand up and be counted. We look forward to receiving your completed questionnaire by Friday, August 9. You can either mail it to: Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, 210 North Bassett Street, Suite 215, Madison, WI 53703 or fax it to us at 608-255-4359. If you have questions or need more information about the pledge, feel free to call us at 608-255-4260 or e-mail us at This email address is being protected from spambots.
