Human Rights Campaign Equality Votes PAC first registered with the state as a political action committee (PAC) at the end of September 2022. The PAC is sponsored by the Human Rights Campaign, a Washington, DC-based organization that champions LGBTQ+ rights. The Human Rights Campaign has a similarly named independent expenditure committee active at the federal level.
Three weeks before the November 8 election, the PAC reported spending nearly $39,000 for online advertising to support Democratic incumbent Gov. Tony Evers against GOP challenger Tim Michels. The ad claimed that reelecting Evers would prevent extremist politicians from outlawing abortion and same-sex marriage and making it more difficult to vote.
Less than a week before the election, the group reported spending $55,000 for further online advertising to support Evers.
Nine days after the election, it reported it had spent $63 for yard signs to support Evers and Democratic incumbent Attorney General Josh Kaul.
The Human Rights Campaign previously made independent expenditures in the 2012 gubernatorial recall election with a different committee.
