This is an unregistered political committee run by the Milwaukee-based Voces de la Frontera, an immigrant rights group that provides legal and employment services and citizenship and language training to immigrant and low-wage workers. Between 2010 and 2024 Voces has reported making over $1.28 million in independent expenditures in Wisconsin state elections.
Two days after the April 1st elections, Voces reported it had spent about $28,200, mostly towards radio and online advertising, in the Wisconsin State Supreme Court and Superintendent of Public Instruction races, with about $20,300 in the former contest and $7,900 in the latter.
In the court race, it backed the eventual winner, Dane County Circuit Court Judge Susan Crawford. Crawford and her opponent, Waukesha County Circuit Court Judge Brad Schimel, were running for a seat held by a retiring member of the court’s 4-3 liberal majority, throwing the ideological direction of the court in question. Consequently, although the court is officially nonpartisan, the state Democratic party and liberal groups heavily backed Crawford, while the state GOP and conservative interests threw their support behind Schimel. Schimel, who previously served as Wisconsin State Attorney General as a Republican, even boasted of his endorsement by President Donald Trump in his campaign. Barring any unexpected vacancies, Crawford’s victory gives liberals control of the court for the next three years.
In the state school superintendent race, Voces supported the incumbent, Jill Underly, who was first elected in 2021. This office is also officially nonpartisan, but support once again divided along partisan lines with the state Democrats lining up behind Underly and Republicans her opponent, educational consultant and former charter school lobbyist Brittany Kinser. Underly won reelection.
