The Koch-backed Americans for Prosperity says it plans on canvassing the district of freshman Democratic State Sen. Patricia Schachtner, who is up for reelection next year in a traditionally Republican district.
The group said it will leave door hangers in Schachtner’s far northwestern Wisconsin district that criticize her opposition last February to a proposed GOP income tax cut that was subsequently vetoed by Democratic Gov. Tony Evers. The literature also criticizes her vote in June against Evers’ proposed state budget that contained an income tax cut. Evers’ budget was significantly changed by the Republican-controlled legislature, prompting every Democratic Senate and Assembly legislator to vote against it.
The group also claimed it would canvass the constituents of GOP Sen. Dan Feyen, of Fond du Lac, and Republican Rep. Shannon Zimmerman, of River Falls, to commend them for supporting tax, health care and spending plans in the GOP’s version of the state budget.
This isn’t the first time the group has panned or praised these legislators. Americans for Prosperity spent more than $180,000 in 2016 and 2018 on outside electioneering activities involving the three legislators, including:
$87,500 in a 2018 special election to attack Schachtner and to support her Republican opponent, who lost in a tight race to replace longtime Republican State Sen. Sheila Harsdorf;
$85,000 in the 2016 fall elections to elect Feyen to an open seat;
About $11,200 in the 2018 fall elections to support Zimmerman’s reelection.
