Senator Fitzgerald was first elected to the Senate in 1994. Recall elections were held in four Senate districts in 2012 including Senator Fitzgerald's district. He had no primary opposition and he faced Democratic and Independent opposition in the recall election NRA Politcial Victory Fund ($277) and Wisconsin Right to Life PAC ($1,058) made independent expenditures favoring Senator Fitzgerald. Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin Inc. ($819), We Are Wisconsin Political Fund ($25,210) and Wisconsin Education Assocation Council ($1,464) made independent expenditures supporting his Democratic opponent. Center for Union Facts and Club for Growth Wisconsin spent undisclosed amounts on "issue ads" supporting Senator Fitzgerald.
