The Professional Firefighters of Wisconsin first created this committee with the name PFFW Defense Fund to make independent expenditures to support Democratic candidates in the 2011 recall elections.
In mid-July it reported spending on yard signs to support Democrat and fire fighter Mahlon Mitchell for governor and before the primary it reported spending on mailings. Mitchell, president of the Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin and the Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor in the 2012 recall, was one of eight active candidates in the Democratic primary. The primary winner, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Evers, defeated the incumbent, Republican Governor Scott Walker, in the November election.
