In this update:
1. Judicial election forum this Thursday in Hayward
2. Video clips of La Crosse event posted on impartialjustice.org
The Democracy Campaign’s Judicial Independence Project has been crisscrossing the state for the past three months, holding events highlighting the need for Supreme Court election reform from Lake Mills to La Crosse, from Janesville to Green Bay and from Milwaukee to Eau Claire. Our next one will be in Hayward this Thursday, May 7 at 6 p.m. in the Veteran’s Community Center at the corner of Highway 63 and Main Street. The event is free and open to the public.
Also on Thursday, Democracy Campaign director Mike McCabe will be debating the merits of electing judges as opposed to appointing them with Wisconsin State Journal publisher Bill Johnston and state Supreme Court Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson at the State Bar of Wisconsin’s annual convention. Mike also will be on a panel with state Government Accountability Board chief Kevin Kennedy and Madison attorney Brady Williamson discussing the pros and cons of regulating so-called "issue ads" sponsored by special interest groups.
The Judicial Independence Project’s next stop will be in Appleton on May 20. For more on that and other events, go here.
We’ve posted new video clips on wisdc.org from our April 13 forum in La Crosse. These are in addition to previously posted video segments from a forum held in November 2008 at the University of Wisconsin Law School.
