Out-of-state executives of the leading maker of smokeless tobacco products showered Assembly Majority Leader Jeff Fitzgerald with campaign contributions after a tax break benefiting the company was slipped into the state budget, a Democracy Campaign report issued today shows. The tax change was championed by, you guessed it, Jeff Fitzgerald.

All but three of the two dozen company executives had never donated to a candidate for state office in Wisconsin before. But when they did decide to give, they didn’t fool around. Their donations to Fitzgerald accounted for well over a third of the large individual contributions he received in the first half of the year.
