With the Legislature's budget-writing committee poised to act on the staffing needs of the state Department of Natural Resources to oversee the mushrooming frack sand mining industry, the Democracy Campaign issued a report this morning showing a 2,100% increase in campaign donations for Wisconsin elections in the last six years from sand mining interests. The force behind ‘rent-to-own’ deregulation
Why does Governor Scott Walker want to exempt so-called “rent-to-own” stores from consumer protection laws? The governor is not saying. But the chief of staff to one of the few Republican lawmakers opposed to this deregulation told a reporter for The Capital Times that it was done “entirely as a favor to Ashley Furniture, a Wisconsin-based manufacturer of low-cost furniture that supplies many of the products in rent-to-own outlets.”
