Senator King was first elected to the Senate in an August 2011 recall election. Recall elections were held in nine Senate districts in 2011 spurred by the passage of Governor Scott Walker's plan to curtail public employee collective bargaining rights. After winning a two-way primary, Senator King defeated the Republican incumbent, Randy Hopper, in the August recall election. Citizen Action of Wisconsin Inc. ($4,480), DFA-Wisconsin ($13,273), DLCC Wisconsin PAC ($103,881), Greater Wisconsin Political Independent Expenditure Fund ($315,660), PCCC Recall Committee ($363), People for the American Way ($42,843), PFFW Defense Fund ($1,707), Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin Political Fund ($11,718), Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin Inc. ($11,600), We Are Wisconsin PAC ($969,533), WEAC PAC ($43,956), Winnebagoland Uniserv PAC ($5,838), Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters PAC ($6,320), Wisconsin WOMEN VOTE! ($2,635) and Working America ($19,991) made independent expenditures favoring Senator King. American Federation for Children Action Fund IE Committee Inc ($1,015), GOPAC Wisconsin PAC ($15,054), NFIB State Trust ($285), NRA Political Victory Fund ($4,952) and Wisconsin Right to Life PAC ($807). One group, Campaign to Defeat Barack Obama PAC (estimated $2,083), made independent expenditures in support of Senator King's opponent but did not register with the state's Government Accountability Board or file any other legally mandated documentation. Greater Wisconsin Committee, One Wisconsin Now and Progressive Change Campaign Committe & Democracy for America spent undisclosed sums on "issue ads" supporting Senator King. |
