Senator Shilling was first elected to the Assembly in 2000 and to the Senate in an August 2011 recall election. Recall elections were held in nine Senate districts in 2011 spurred by the passage of Governor Scott Walker's plan to curtail public employee collective bargaining rights. After winning a two-way primary, Senator Shilling defeated the Republican incumbent, Dan Kapanke, in the August recall election. Citizen Action of Wisconsin Inc. ($4,208), DFA-Wisconsin ($13,273), DLCC Wisconsin PAC ($2), Greater Wisconsin Political Independent Expenditure Fund ($88,196), PCCC Recall Committee ($2,651), People for the American Way ($44,856), Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin Political Fund ($12,411), Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin Inc. ($11,600), We Are Wisconsin PAC ($611,044), WEAC PAC ($34,380), Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters IE Committee ($11,430), Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters PAC ($6,657), Wisconsin Sierra Club Education Committee ($17,949) and Wisconsin WOMEN VOTE! ($101,475) made independent expenditures favoring Senator Shilling. American Federation for Children Action Fund IE Committee Inc. ($1,015), Faith Family Freedom Fund ($12,365), GOPAC Wisconsin PAC ($23,554), NFIB Safe Trust ($285), NRA Political Victory Fund ($1,183), Volunteers for Agriculture ($23,885) and Wisconsin Right to Life PAC ($482) made independent expenditures supporting her opponent. One group, Campaign to Defeat Barack Obama PAC (estimated $2,083), made independent expenditures in support of Senator Shilling's opponent but did not register with the state's Government Accountability Board or file any other legally mandated documentation. Greater Wisconsin Committee, One Wisconsin Now and Progressive Change Campaign Committee & Democracy for America spent undisclosed sums on "issue ads" in support of Senator Shilling. Americans for Prosperity, Club for Growth Wisconsin, and Presidential Coalition spend undisclosed sums on "issue ads" in opposition. |
